Session 1: 23 & Me: The Downside of Sharing Your DNA - With the proliferation of Ancestory.com and 23 & Me, people are more curious than ever before about their biological family members, both living and deceased. For people of significant wealth, this can cause problems if someone “out of the blue” claims a right to wealth or inheritance. Using lessons learned from an actual case, this presentation provides tips and best practices for drafting a will and trust to avoid problems, outlines what happens if someone, particularly a high-net-worth individual, dies with or without a trust or will, and describes the expense, both monetarily and relationally, involved in fighting this type of claim. Session 2: Managing Your Workforce in an Age of Mobility, Flexibility and Generational Shifts - Explore the legal, compliance, and employee relations challenges nonprofits are facing as employees become increasingly dispersed both in terms of geography and expectations, including challenges associated with the rise of remote work, the availability of viable alternatives to traditional employment, and the seemingly growing call for a new understanding of the role of work in life. Session 3: Top Things to Consider When Terminating a Trust - Terminating trusts can, and should, be done for a number of reasons in a variety of different circumstances. This presentation is going to help you identify those situations, guide you through important considerations when doing so, and provide you with some of the tools you may need. Session 4: Patent License Issues from the In-House Perspective - Key considerations in several common patent transaction models. The RPX patent aggregation and licensing model. Patent issues in IP agreements include indemnity clauses, limits of liability, IP ownership issues, and forum selection clauses. Session 5: Setting Boundaries with Clients and Colleagues - Using mindset mastery practices to improve attorney wellness by setting boundaries in your work.

Session 1: Lessons From the Kennedy Assassination for Cross-Examination - If ever there was an event about which witnesses should have agreed, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy was that event, but the eyewitnesses could not agree about even the most basic details of what happened in plain view in Dealey Plaza. Why and how do eyewitnesses fail to remember correctly even the most basic details of what they observed? What can trial lawyers learn from discrepancies in witness accounts of famous historical events, including the Kennedy assassination and the sinking of the Titanic? Session 2: Texas’ Mental Health System: Overview and Local Solutions to Address Gaps - Hear an overview of the public mental health system in Texas and programs developed through the Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council’s Crisis Collaborative. Examine the legal basis for this system, the roles of each type of facility, points of access, and funding. Learn how efforts to implement collaborative, local solutions at the cross-payor level have addressed crisis responses and are now attempting to move upstream to address access to care before mental health crises arise. Session 3: Insights into Cryptocurrency for Nonprofits - Join Armanino’s digital assets and nonprofit experts to learn about market trends in cryptocurrency; Bitcoin and how it can diversify your organization’s investment portfolio; and cryptocurrency opportunities for nonprofit organizations. Session 4: Gun Rights: An Overview of the Rights of Landlords and Tenants - Session 5: Approaches to Privilege During Deposition Breaks - In an age of Zoom depositions, it is more important than ever to understand that different jurisdictions take different approaches the question of privilege during deposition breaks, with some disallowing any privilege at all once the deposition commences and others taking a more nuanced approach. Join Jason Boulette as he explores these different approaches, what they share in common, and where they differ sharply.

Session 1: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning: Legal and Ethical Considerations - How can people help AI to avoid picking up bad habits or worse, perpetuating discrimination? AI and ML are transforming people’s daily lives, but at the same time raise legal and ethical concerns like bias and discrimination, fairness, IP ownership, and data rights and privacy. This panel discusses real-world examples of such concerns, the role AI and ML systems may play, and the associated legal implications. Session 2: Prudently Picking Your E-Discovery Team: Vendors, Forensics Experts, and More Session 3: Storytelling and Themes - The power of a simple story, it can transform the room, transform your audience, transform you. Session 4: A Conversation with Brittany K. Barnett: Attorney, Author, and Entrepreneur - Hear attorney, author, and entreprenuer, Brittany K. Barnett, discuss her experience and advice for others as a founder of two nonprofit organizations, as pro bono counsel representing clients incarcerated in federal prison, and as founder of social enterprises devoted to providing supports and resources to formerly incarcertated individuals. Session 5: Fraud Is Now Legal in Texas (for Some People) - Three Texas intermediate appellate courts have held that corporate actors—directors, officers, managers, shareholders, and probably common employees and agents—are immune from personal liability for the fraud and misrepresentation these actors commit as long as the deceit relates to or arises from a contractual obligation of the corporation. Two and maybe three Texas appellate courts have rejected this immunity, and federal courts have also split. Courts adopting immunity claim the authority of a statute, but this immunity cannot be justified by the statute's language or history, and adopting it creates (probably unnoticed) results that confirm the legislature never intended it.

The election law course contained a number of partisan positions and inaccuracies. The audience would have been better served with a more balanced approach.
Voting Law should have included some actual instruction on the new Election Administration Laws in Texas, that contain some important changes. There was none of that in the presentation. Very disappointing! The other presentations were great.
The topics in the five sessions were in widely different topics, so there was no reptitious overlap in the different sessions.
Natalie Arbaugh’s presentation was one of the best and most thoughtful I have ever heard.
